Joanne Slaughter - preserving memories: recollections and recipes and family and friends

PRESERVING MEMORIES - READER REVIEWS

Praise for Preserving Memories...

Joanne has written a perfect cookbook in my eyes that would also make a great Christmas present for anyone who likes family history and the food that made families great to be around. The pictures that Joanne used shared her memories of loved ones and are the reasons that I read the historical stories she wrote about how the recipes came about over the generations. The back cover was a creative way of creating a cookbook for everyone to enjoy. This is a book that will allow cooks and bakers of all skill levels a chance to share what makes their recipes special as well.

I have really been enjoying dipping into the book—the recipes, your family history, and all the photos. It’s so evocative of my own memories of growing up. From my book designer/publisher perspective. My initial thought is that It’s very attractively laid out and an amazing accomplishment. I love your choice of photos and how all the elements are so well tied together. It’s very inviting. Your indexes are unusual, and add an interesting touch. It’s a gem!

I am just having The Best Time! Only frustrated that we can't sit and discuss it all! Am reading each and every recipe! My all-time favorite is your banana bread. So moist! Just saw my Swiss cheese loaf and your very wonderful introduction about me. So darn accurate! How do you remember so many details about all your friends and family!? Thanks for those words and remembrances. Onward into Your life!

Wow!!! Congratulations, Joanne, on your new book, and thank you for including my family's tomato pudding recipe! I love the pictures of you throughout your life. What a wonderful way to remember people and places. You have given me encouragement to do the pictorial history of Owosso that I have always wanted to do!

What a wonderful and unique memoir! It’s Sunday evening, and I just spent the last hour very enjoyably perusing recipes and reading your memories (so many involving time spent at Cheekwood!) Truly, the book is a wonderful peek into your life, and I feel I know you better! It was interesting to read about your ancestors, especially Indian Eve, and fun to learn of your family traditions, special times in your life, and seeing photos from your past - and your present. Bravo, Joanne!

Joanne Fletcher Slaughter's Preserving Memories is filled with tidbits that feed your mind and soul, along with your stomach since the book is filled with luscious recipes. Fun facts of days gone by, mixed with current traditions, make this a great book to keep or giveaway; shoot, do both--buy two! Much more than a cookbook, it's a family book...one you can add some of your own morsels to!

I am really enjoying your delightful book! Not only am I getting some recipe ideas - but I am getting to know you and that’s been a treat. Though I don’t like to cook, I do like to eat, so I drool over every recipe. Thanks for writing this really clever, delicious book!

What a wonderful job you have done! Not only do the recipes look great, your weaving in stories about family and friends is lovely. I feel that I know you better from having read your cookbook. Through editing several cookbooks, I know how much work goes in to making a good one...and you have certainly succeeded. Although I don't cook as much as I used to, reading Preserving Memories has inspired me to try some new recipes.

I read your whole book and think it's really special! You have done a beautiful job of making a memoir very interesting and varied. A dream of mine was that my grandmother's recipe would see the light of day sometime, somewhere, somehow. And, you made it possible! In such a big way. As I was reading the page, I felt like Nanny Kuntz was right there with me!

The cookbook is beautiful, and I am both proud of you and honored to have been included. I absolutely love it! I hope that your book falls into the hands of many, many cooks. I know my family and I will enjoy experimenting with new recipes this fall and winter, perfect timing!!

A wonderful collection of recipes! It’s so you to put this together. I particularly enjoyed “Christmas Morsels” – lots of fond memories!
